As Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War came to a close earlier this year, there was one big question left unanswered — could Thanos actually snap his fingers and turn the entire universe into dust?
“Where did everyone go when Thanos snapped?” is a question that has been asked by many people. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo has found that Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet Snap isn’t actually possible.

Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet snap, which murdered a number of significant MCU characters and half the universe in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, couldn’t have been conceivable, according to Georgia Institute of Technology researchers. With Thanos being a big, purple extraterrestrial who doesn’t exist, it seems apparent, but after a discussion with students over whether the move could be executed, some of the professors felt obligated to dig into the science. Thanos could not have snapped his fingers at the pace he did because of the density and composition of the Infinity Gauntlet, according to researchers.
Georgia Tech provides the following information:
The researchers studied a range of finger snaps using high-speed photography, automated image processing, and dynamic force sensors. They investigated friction by covering fingers with various materials, including metallic thimbles, to imitate the consequences of attempting to snap while wearing a metallic gauntlet, as Thanos does.
The researchers reported maximum rotational velocities of 7,800 degrees per second and rotational accelerations of 1.6 million degrees per second squared for a conventional snap with bare fingers. The rotational velocity is lower than that of the fastest rotational movements seen in humans, which are produced by professional baseball pitchers’ arms while pitching. However, the snap acceleration is over three times quicker than the rotational acceleration of a professional baseball pitcher’s arm, making it the fastest human angular acceleration ever observed.
“I leaped out of my chair when I first saw the data,” said Saad Bhamla, an assistant professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering who researches ultrafast movements in biological systems. “A finger snap takes less than seven milliseconds, which is more than twenty times quicker than an eye blink, which takes over 150 milliseconds.”
“Our findings show that Thanos’ metal plated fingers prevented him from snapping,” said Raghav Acharya, the study’s lead author and an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech. “So, rather than true physics, it’s most likely Hollywood special effects at work!” Please accept my apologies for the spoiler.”
The full study paper may be found in the November 2021 edition of the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

In “who disappeared in the snap,” a recent Marvel comic, Thanos snaps his fingers and erases half of all life from existence. The premise is that it’s not possible for this to actually happen. Researchers have discovered that in order to do so, the amount of power required would be too much to handle.
