According to subscriber statistics provided by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Apple’s streaming service isn’t doing so well. According to the union, Apple has fewer than 20 million customers in the United States and Canada as of July, a low figure when compared to Netflix and Disney+. As of Q2, the services had 209 and 116 million customers, respectively.
However, the figures for Apple TV+ may not be completely true, as Apple is said to be reporting fewer subscribers in order to pay cheaper prices to behind-the-scenes production staff. According to CNBC:
According to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, a union that represents TV and movie workers who perform jobs like operating cameras and building sets, Apple’s TV+ service had less than 20 million subscribers in the United States and Canada as of July, allowing it to pay behind-the-scenes production crew lower rates than streamers with more subscriptions.
[…] According to the existing deal, high-budget streaming productions may offer reduced rates to employees if the streaming service has less than 20 million users in the United States and Canada, which is decided every year on July 1. According to a union official, Apple informed IATSE that it had fewer than 20 million users.
This may seem dubious for the world’s most valuable publicly listed business, but Apple has claimed that it pays prices comparable to top streaming providers. NBCUniversal’s Peacock and ViacomCBS’ Paramount+ are two other streaming services that haven’t yet surpassed the 20 million subscriber threshold.
