The PC port of the FFVII Remake was released in a state that fans described as ‘terrible performance’. While some are blaming it on piracy, most believe the poor quality is due to Square Enix shipping an unfinished debug build.

On Thursday, Square Enix published the long-awaited PC adaptation of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for the Epic Games Store, but many fans are unimpressed for reasons that go beyond the game’s exclusivity and absence of a Steam version.
For example, Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia has labeled Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PC “the worst AAA release I have seen on PC in a long time,” a comment spurred by the game’s stuttering and framerate reductions, as well as the absence of standard graphical choices like anti-aliasing.
In a tweet, Battaglia’s colleague John Linneman remarked, “Alex brought his clips over for us to check out and, sure, the PC version of FFVIIR is bad.” “He shot this using an RTX3090 + 10900k at just 1080p, and it’s a disaster.” This version undermines the seamless presentation that was crucial to its tale telling.”
What’s more fascinating (and perhaps humiliating for Square Enix) is that the version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade delivered to the Epic Games Store might have been a beta. A line published by modders who went into the game’s files says, “BuildConfiguration=PPBC Development.”

The game’s description on the Epic Games Store states, “Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER operative, falls on the mako-powered metropolis of Midgar.” “Using cutting-edge graphical technology, a new fighting system, and an extra adventure starring Yuffie Kisaragi, the universe of the timeless classic FINAL FANTASY VII is revived.”
Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for $69.99 on the Epic Games Store, but it’s unclear if any, or all, of its future PC games will be priced similarly.
