Sony announced that Anthony Mackie will star in their upcoming live-action Twisted Metal series. The actor had previously starred in the video game adaptation of the film, but this is his first foray into a full-length feature based on a PlayStation franchise.

Anthony Mackie is a talented actor who appears to have no trouble getting big parts in highly praised dramas, whether as mechanical-winged superheroes or more realistic people.
Despite the recent announcement that Mackie will reprise his role as Captain America in a fourth Marvel Studios film, Deadline reports that the actor plans to keep busy by starring in a live-action adaptation of Twisted Metal, the popular vehicular combat franchise created by the now-defunct 1990s developer SingleTrac.
Since the first game’s release in 1995 for the original PlayStation console, the Twisted Metal franchise has spawned a slew of sequels, but they all feature a cast of colorful characters who must kill one another in a variety of vehicles ranging from cop cars to ice cream trucks in order to win the titular tournament.
Asad Qizilbash, the president of PlayStation Productions, stated, “We’re delighted to have Anthony Mackie on board.” “His ability to combine humor, action, and drama is ideal for the Twisted universe we’re creating.”
Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy based on an original story from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about a motormouthed outsider who is promised a better life if he can deliver a mystery item through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. He’ll confront ferocious marauders driving vehicles of devastation and other perils of the open road, like a crazy clown driving an all-too-familiar ice cream truck, with the aid of a trigger-happy car thief.
Mackie will portray John Doe, a character in the film. In Twisted Metal: Black and Twisted Metal: Lost, Doe is the driver of Roadkill, although Mackie’s rendition seems to be a far different take.
Doe is a shrewd milkman who speaks as quickly as he drives. With no recollection of his background, he is given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fulfill his dream of finding community, but only if he can survive a barrage of brutal vehicular warfare.
“We’ve long admired Anthony’s incredible body of work and felt he was the only actor capable of portraying a character as deep, hilarious, and fascinating as John Doe,” said Glenn Adilman, Sony TV’s EVP Comedy Development. “For our benefit, he agreed.”
